| Alternatives to paraffin |
| There are many ways to create wax, including traditional bees wax and wax that is made from rendered fats. This is an art which is for the advanced candle maker. For modern simplicity, just get a slab or two of paraffin and that way your lamps can stay fueled, your candles lit and your canning jars will always have a solid seal. It is also interesting to note that wax was used in ancient times to seal communications, by placing wax over an envelope closure and stamping it with a distinctive mark, usually by way of a signet ring. If the seal was broken, then the message was suspect.. Usually a visual inspection would make tampering quite obvious. In a survival situation even such primitive communication techniques and security checks may have their place |
