Survival uses for garbage cans
|
| PLASTIC TRASH CANS |
alternate uses
|
| The uses of plastic trash cans are numerous. A clean can with a lid makes an excellent storage container for grains (when lined properly). The natural functions of a trash can include water proofing, some animal resistance and the basic function of a large capacity container make it ideal for a number of uses. Obviously sanitation is a factor and a used trash can is not usually suitable for re-purposing. |

DISCUSSION OF ALTERNATE USAGES
|
| A large capacity can has a lid and provides an insulating shelter and potential hiding place in a dire emergency, although it is likely to be cramped, if placed properly it is basically a mini-cave. |
| The smaller compost can shown above is good if you are seperating waste and need a low scent intensity storage space for gardening compost materials. |
| If you lack a rain barrel then a clean trash can may be improvised into a water catch. |
| Generally speaking a trash can makes an excellent water resistant storage area for items which may be damaged by water, or for a collection of long garden implements such as rakes, shovels and hoes. |
| Trash cans can be modified for growing potatoes and a few other root crops |
Improvised repairs
|
| Plastic garbage cans can also be cut to create makeshift patches that are water resistant, such as for emergency roof repairs and other improvised fixes. A large can represents a significant sized sheet of semi rigid plastic which can be cut apart and nailed down or otherwise attached as necessary. |
REFUSE COLLECTION
|
Obviously a trash can can be used for its designed purpose of refuse collection. This is after all, what it is designed for. Sanitation is a key factor in any survival situation The ability to port and remove waste away from the encampment is vital to protect against rodents, disease and other complications which arise from generally unsanitary environments |
| Garbage cans are a quick way to make an improvised commode if a better sanitation system isn't available. |
| Debris removal and other tasks is a very basic use, construction sites and shops of all kinds will generally have a significant number of large trash cans available. |
