How to select a knife for your survival kit
This selection of knives
is oriented towards
multi-use tools which
are either very
specialized or highly
general in terms of
usage.  A good
survival knife functions
as a mini toolkit in its
own
right.
Survival knives and multi tools.  You will want one or more of these depending on the
particulars of the situations you anticipate facing.   Some are oriented towards defense against wild animals and others are geared towards utilitarian purposes such as cleaning fish or performing as an all purpose tool kit, a function which was first made famous by the legendary Swiss Army Knife.   Knives can also be used to sharpen sticks for use in pit traps for harvesting animals when food is scarce.

Many knives feature retractable blades which makes them safer to carry, although these may have legality considerations in some jurisdictions which you should look into.   The drawback to retractable knives is that they are often more dangerous to use as there safety depends on the quality of their blade locking system.   Hunting knives have been used since the earliest era of tool usage and have proven to be highly effective hunting tools.   Even large animals such as bears have sometimes been successfully defended against using a survival knife, although direct encounters with large animals is dangerous and should be avoided if at all possible.
