| Safety equipment, including fire supression and alarm systems are moderately high demand items. There are many types of safety equipment and protection systems, covering a wide range of hazards. The hardest to obtain, and at the same time most useful of these are fire extinguishers including even mundane chemicals such as baking soda. The risk of fire is heightened when fire service is limited or unavailable, and fire can spread rapidly if water supplies are limited. First aid kits and medical supplies vanish quickly, particularly in events where traumatic injuries are common, such as in revolutionary situations or in the event of a large scale disaster such as an earthquake. Natural disasters are increasingly dangerous in situations where normal societal structures of law and order are strained to extremes by circumstances. Having a supply of medicines, anti-biotics and other basic first aid equipment can be invaluable in the event of injury. Every disaster kit sold has at least some first aid provisions, but these should be considered consumables and a decent supply kit is recommended. If you are doing wilderness or other extended overland travel, particularly on foot, the value of having a first aid kit cannot be over-emphasized. Next on the list are big dogs. Dogs provide protection and security, however large animals consume a lot of food and dog chow is something to have a reserve of if you want to keep your animals nearby and loyal. Insects can be kept in check with bug spray. When normal sanitation systems are interrupted insect populations find very condusive environments for expansion. Mosquitos in particularly are very undesireable, their bite is a nuiscance, but it is also an ideal carrier for serious blood borne infections. Ability to keep mosquitos in check can be a life saver. Carbon monoxide detectors are also on the list, smoke detectors are useful for providing early alert to fire. In general, these are battery powered, but they tend to have fairly long battery lifes. Early alerts to fire hazards can be instrumental in preventing a fire from spreading dangerously, or if it has already, can alert a sleeping person and give them a chance to escape. Smoke inhalation takes many more casualties than fire itself, so this type of alarm is sensible, particularly if you are in a static position near other buildings or flammable materials. |
