Stockpiles of food are just common sense.   By having several months worth of food set aside for hard times can be useful in a survival situation, and also practical should you encounter a temporary shift of finances.

When you store food it is important to rotate the stock, so that the food closest to expiration is consumed first, this ensures a consistent supply as you build up your reserves.

In the event of a transportation strike, food shipments can stop suddenly.   It is expected in a scenario of this nature that grocery shelves would be barren within a couple of weeks.     Unless you have a sustainable long term food production plan, the need for food is vital.

Those who have stored food, will be in control of a fundamental commodity and will not be forced into the open to scavange.

While it is a good idea to have long term food such as canned or dried goods, it is not a great idea to advertise that your stronghold is well stocked.    When others become desperate they will come knocking, and communities have been known to seize goods for communal purposes when it becomes known that someone is "hoarding".

Good planning of your food stockpile rations is smart, and allows you to care for your close friends or family as well as yourself.   If these goods are seized, then your labors are lost to those who lacked foresight.     For this reason it is important to quietly prepare.

In general food storage is best in cool dry places.    Some commodities such as salt and vinegar are also useful as they can preserve the shelf life of other foods.   There are several good provisioning guides on the net which will help you determine the best way to build a long term supply, in terms of quantity.   This will be added to this site as time permits.
