| CLOTHING |
| Clothing is the first line of defense against the elements. When survival is at stake, functionality takes precedence over fashion. Clothes serve a very specific purpose, and that is to insulate the body against the elements. Quality clothing is durable, insulates well, and is designed to withstand the more extremen situations that nature provides. When traveling, having the right clothes can make the difference between comfort and hypothermia. If and when supply lines become disrupted, high quality manufactured clothing becomes a scarcity. The more utilitarian the clothes are, the faster they disappear from available resource pools. Modern materials make many highly functional clothing items that are impossible to replicate without advanced materials sourcing. Secondary considerations that are a factor for clothes include coloration, as this can provide either particularly high or low visibility, each of which serves a different purpose. When stealth is a necesssity, dark clothing or camouflage coloration is preferable. In some instances it is important to be seen from a distance in which case bright colored clothing is an asset. The best solution is usually to have low visibility clothes augmented by high visibility clothing that is lightweight and can be quickly applied should the need arise. Quality clothing goes beyond insulation capacity and materials and into the realm of tactical advantage. A tactical vest, for instance, has a number of pockets for carrying supplies of various types and having tools within easy reach. Selection of clothing should be done in a thoughtful manner, at least for anything you plan on packing into a go kit. One of the most important apparel is footwear, as sustained travel requires foot wear that can withstand rough terrain and provides comfortable support for the feet as well as protection from the elements. |
