The modern world is rife with difficulties and disaster can strike anywhere at any time.   Contingency planning is a sign of intelligence, the ability to anticipate danger and prepare for it separates the survivors from the unlucky in a very Darwinistic fashion. 

Every day, somewhere on the planet, there is an epic disaster that is happening.    The types and causes of these are numerous including natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes and climatological to man made disasters such as warfare, conflict and rebellion.

In between those extremes are politically influenced issues and supply chain disruptions, both of which are causes of distribution issues which lead to famine, hunger, rampant disease and other major issues which can be life changing for the people who are caught up in these turmoils.  

Even a casual student of history is aware of that governments are surprisingly unstable and great empires rise and far with regularity.   Inequities in financial distribution systems, supply chain problems and political agendas are the typical driving qualities of these events.
Internal strife and external aggression are common manifestations of the human drive to control resources, minds and agendas.    

A powerful government can shift into dis-array with surprising speed.   In a period of about six months, the Soviet Union fell from grace as a world super-power into a tumultuous period of  political and financial upheaval.    In less well rooted countries, these types of setbacks are not always recovered from.    All through history, empires have risen and fallen.    Imperial over-extension, resource disparities, hyper-inflation and imbalanced economies are the usual root causes of this level of chaos.   Political instability can lead to violent revolution with a frightening rapidity and emergency measures are quickly enacted in those situations.     If you are caught in a historical event of this magnitude, preparation can make the difference between safely riding out the storm and being caught in the path of the stampede of social collapse.  

Natural disasters tend to be localized but can be quite extensive and may arrive with little warning.   Volcano's, floods, storms, hurricanes and earthquakes are common.  

While modern medicine has held plague in check over the last few decades, virologists are constantly on the watch for the next outbreak of a superbug which could spread rapidly and decimate the population.    An event of this magnitude would take many random people and those left in the aftermath could easily find themselves in the wake of a social collapse of unprecedented impact.  

Around the world, the aftermath of the Arab Spring is being felt, and the level of discontent with the status quo is an unknown.   There are strong indicators that the overall economy has been significantly and perhaps fatally undermined.   These two factors, as much as any create a dangerous headwind and potentially volatile political climate in almost every nation in the world.  

While it is unknown when, where and what type of disaster may appear from the horizon, there are only two types of people when it happens.   The prepared and unprepared.
