| Advantages and disadvantages of light sticks for illumination |
| Light sticks are useful for providing illumination without consumption of power. Most light sticks have long shelf lives and can be used for direct illumination, for trail marking, entertainment and can be used to illuminate an area that you are advancing into such as through an ascension or descension over difficult terrain. High intensity light sticks can briefly provide a very visible burst of white light for signaling or where higher degrees of illumination are needed. The contents of a glow stick can also be used to provide visual markings. Advantages over flashlights include the ability to place in different locations and maintain continuous lighting, the ability to place them at a distance through throwing and the absence of a need for battery power. Full 360 degree lighting may be useful in illuminating an area. Disadvantages include range, ability to control the light beam and relatively low visibility of the illumination factor. Light sticks have a specific role and perform somewhat different functions than flashlights. Once activated a light stick has a limited lifespan during which it glows, as can be seen from the above table. |
