| Propane cylinders should always be approached with a safety first attitude. Any bottled delivery system has the potential to have a bad seal or other leak issue. A propane leak detector is always worth considering if you anticipate using propane as a primary fuel source |

Choosing the right propane cylinders is both about size and portability depending on your needs. Larger cannisters are bulkier and will probably require some form of transport to move them around effectively. Smaller cannisters can be carried on your person, although for safety reasons a propane cylinder carrier is recommended. A carrying case will provide additional impact resistance and give better protection for the valve assemblies. The actual quantity of fuel that can be stored varies with they system, and is part of the decision that you need to make in making a choice about size versus portability. Generally small cannisters are more versatile, as a number of them can be carried, stored, split up and otherwise distributed. Additionally a smaller capacity cannister can be more easily replaced in the event that it is damaged or unuseable. Unfortunately most smaller cannisters are one-shot solutions and cannot be refilled easily, if at all. They would be expected to make good trade items, however. The converse is that larger cannisters tend to have a better cost to capacity ratio and can generally be refilled if a larger propane source is available. A larger fuel supply also allows less frequent change intervals. For a fixed postion there are advantages to having larger cannisters, particularly if sufficient storage space is available. |
